GED Test Preparation Information

Besides obtaining reference material at your local library, there are many institutions throughout Cook County that prepare potential students to take the GED Test.

You can contact the your local city or community college or you can call the Illinois Adult Literacy hot line (toll-free) at (800) 321-9511 for a GED preparation class near you. Most of these classes are offered at no charge.

To obtain preparation material for the Illinois Constitution Test call (800) 322-3905.

Registering to take the GED Test in Cook County is done via the mail.

Note: You will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader on your PC in order to download this form. Your system will advise you if you don't have it and will tell you how to download it.

Once you have an application, follow the directions below in order to  request a test date.

Requesting a test date

  • Click on the "Sites & Dates" button for a list of available test sites and dates.
  • Choose the area in Cook County you want to test in.
  • Choose the test site and date you wish to attend.
  • Make a first and second choice of test dates. You must choose a test date that is at least four weeks from the date you complete your application. (REQUESTED TEST DATES ARE NOT GUARANTEED. If the test date(s) you requested are full by the time we receive your application, you will be assigned to the next available test date. YOUR WAIT TIME DEPENDS ON THE VOLUME OF APPLICATIONS.)
  • Print the test site name and date of the session you wish to attend in the Test Site/Date Request box.
  • Complete the application and send with money order or cashiers check to Cook County GED Testing Program, P.O. Box 408370, Chicago, IL 60640

Requesting Special Accommodations

Please Read The Following Very Carefully

Not all individuals can be fairly tested under standard conditions. If you have a documented learning disability, a physical disability, or an emotional disability, you may qualify for special accommodations when taking the GED Tests. If approved, special accommodations are provided at no additional charge to the GED Candidate.

Please be aware that this process can take up to two to six months to process. When your documents have been processed a representative will contact you by mail or by phone.
